2.9.11

this long weekend is the last one before fall begins. this summer our studio and home was more bearable with air conditioning. I was fussing about the cost, but in the end it was the best money we ever spent. I am looking forward to the next few months - I love the busy hum of the studio. I still can't believe all the products that come of our studio mainly made by the two of us. I struggle so much with the notion of going bigger - getting a lot of the work made by others - I think that I have to start thinking that way - I don't think I can sustain it this way for much longer. part of the reason I didn't go back to teaching was because the studio needed more of my time.
we have a new calendar and it's sure to not disappoint - I wanted to show you the new design here, but it's going to be in the next BAH issue.
I do want to show you my new pattern "rain" or as john refers to it as my stitches. this drawing was adapted from a drawing I showed you from my sketchbook. it's fun to reinvent your ideas. I hope you like these new pieces as much as I do.
enjoy your weekend friends! and see you next week. xxa

  2. i agree with John, they look like stitching (which is perfect): if it were rain it should be going up & down, no?

  5. I think this is my favourite print of yours! It looks great with the triangle print (another favourite of mine). I love how you have "framed" the print on the tote bag.

Your beautiful hand is obvious in all your work. I can imagine it would be hard to relinquish some of the making process to others. But it sounds like a bit of help in the production would give you more time and space to create. It can be hard to find a balance, but I'm sure you will find a way.

  8. Oh yes, Arounna, I totally here you about the struggle to go bigger and what that involves.
I must say that my experience of hiring summer interns from art school the past 2 summers has been really rewarding for me. It was a lot of training in the beginning, but they were both eager to learn and very hard workers. I kept their tasks on my work to the more mundane and 'no-brainer' parts of making, such as sieving, pouring slip, sponging, cutting and peeling- stuff that needs doing but not necessarily by me.
My studio will be quiet again in fall so I can breath in my own space again for a few months, although with the holiday season coming up, I may be looking for someone again. Regardless it is kind of nice to have someone temporarily with no strings or expectations attached for long-term employment. I find the prospect of being responsible for someone's paycheck and livelihood too daunting at this stage in my little business.
Love the new print- it's all so beautiful on linen! Love it!

  10. Love the new pattern. Although I love to know that each of the pieces from Bookhou have the unique attention from you and john I think it might be a wise idea to get some help in order to have more time for yourselfs and for creation. :-)
