this structure I made many years ago - it was an experiment to create a form/structure completely from paper - I still remember how I made it. if I explained it - you would think I was crazy. there's something about repetitive gestures that I like - maybe it's meditative. I'm not sure anymore. the production work I do is repetitive and I have a real process since I do it mostly on my own. john sometimes helps with fabric cutting and of course he does some of the drawing, he doesn't enjoy screen-printing - he feels like it's too much pressure. well he has his own work to do - he is currently working on two tables, eight kids chairs, and five mobiles - yikes!
I really like how the shadow of this piece is like a drawing - the shadow also looks more like the object - john's been bugging me for a long time to do the shadows of my sculptures as a screen-print - when I was in grad school I did a whole series of drawings based on shadows. I also couldn't resist posting this picture of lil' p - her favourite hangout is in the shop window - she's like a cat enjoying the sunshine.

  1. What a lovely post: shadow and light. I love the shadow your sculpture casts. I think John's idea of printing your shadows is a wonderful one. And little p looks so sweet in the sunshine. I too love doing this. My husband calls me "little cat".

  2. Sunshine on your back *is* one of the best feelings ever.. And I think printing the shadows is a great idea - it would be a little like capturing the sun..

  5. i think after mexico I want to sit in a sunny window with "p" too. I love your sculptural work and pod shapes. It was the first thing that drew me to you as an artist, before we became friends.

  7. Paper! Wonderful piece. I love being surprised by materials; thought it might be hemp string or some kind of jute.
I'm sure P in the window also draws in some nice customers to see her smiling face and pretty pin-tucked top :)
